I have been working on a series based on the stories in our area of Mary Magdalene. Near to where we live is a beautiful rocky escarpment clothed by an ancient sacred forest that is said to have harboured Mary Magdalen in the last 30 – 40 years of her life. The stories go, that Mary Magdalene, along with the two Saints Mary Salome and Mary of Clopas, arrived miraculously on the shore in the south of France after being set adrift by boat from Alexandria in Egypt.

We live in an area in Provence that is incredibly beautiful and abundant and with water ways and sources and mountains shielding lush valleys with microclimates that protect ancient trees and make perfect farming conditions. Early humans have always lived here, evidence of their remains are in the many caves overlooking the valleys and rivers where they were always able to easily forage. The Rocher de Roquebruneis an imposing range of burnt siena rock overlooking the Argens river and is filled with the legends of ancient humans. I have created this drawing with the stele figure lying in the rocks to honour the ancient lives of humans entwined in memory with earth.

Silence comes from my Ancestor series. Influenced by Cycladic and Neolithic art, this sculpture is a homage to the eternal essence within ourselves.
