While I was working on my large painting for Capital M Beijing I would need to work on another painting to help keep me fresh. I used to work 3 sessions a day of about 3 to 4 hours each, I did this for over a year on the same painting. So when I did stop to create something else, I could see nothing else but water. This Water Study responded to my need for some peace. It is fairly large, with that, and its apparent depth, one gets the feeling you can step right in to it. It is a wonderfull painting for meditation.
Pendant que je travaillais sur mon grand tableau pour Capital M Beijing, j’avais besoin de travailler sur un autre tableau pour me garder au frais. J’avais l’habitude de travailler trois séances par jour d’environ trois à quatre heures chacune, et ce pendant plus d’un an sur le même tableau. Ainsi, lorsque je m’arrêtais pour créer autre chose, je ne voyais rien d’autre que de l’eau. Cette étude de l’eau a répondu à mon besoin de paix. Elle est assez grande, avec cela, et sa profondeur apparente, on a le sentiment que l’on peut y entrer directement. C’est une peinture merveilleuse pour la méditation.

In 2007 I was commissioned to create a large painting, 50 meters long by up to 5 meters tall. It was to go down the entire spinal wall of the restaurant, Capital M Beijing, overlooking Tiananmen Square. It was an active painting, in the sense people would walk through the middle of it down a staircase and into the main room, waiters would appear through sliding doors imbedded into the painting surface – it was impossible to see the complete painting at one time. In that way it was also like a 3 dimensional sculpture.
This panel comes from a wall on the original plan but later deleted. The complete painting is of a river scene based on the Chinese Admiral Zheng He who departed from this river to circumnavigate the world in 1421.
Sadly, after 10 years the painting was taken down, and moved into M on the Bund Bar in Shanghai.
En 2007, on m’a demandé de créer une grande peinture de 50 mètres de long sur 5 mètres de haut. Elle devait recouvrir tout le mur d’enceinte du restaurant Capital M Beijing, qui donne sur la place Tiananmen. Il s’agissait d’une peinture active, dans le sens où les gens passaient en son milieu, descendaient un escalier et entraient dans la salle principale, les serveurs apparaissaient par des portes coulissantes incrustées dans la surface de la peinture – il était impossible de voir l’ensemble de la peinture en même temps. En ce sens, il s’agissait également d’une sculpture tridimensionnelle.
Ce panneau provient d’un mur figurant sur le plan original mais supprimé par la suite. La peinture complète représente une scène fluviale inspirée de l’amiral chinois Zheng He qui partit de cette rivière pour faire le tour du monde en 1421.
Malheureusement, après dix ans, le tableau a été démonté et déplacé dans le bar M on the Bund à Shanghai.
