In 1997, we did a wonderful art residency in Ireland on the ring of Kerry at Cill Rialaig, Ballinskelligs. We lived in a tiny cottage in a restored pre-famine village on the cliffs overlooking the Atlantic Sea. We loved the residency so much we rented a house for an extra 3 months to absorb more from the area. There was such a rich history there, with the remains of ancient standing stones and round houses and burial places evident in the fields and hills around the residency. It was also an area full of great stories of the monks who lived on the Skelligs during the ‘dark ages’, coming to the mainland to bury their dead and of the vikings who raided and plundered the area. While we were there, there were many single old and not very old men in the area living solitary hermetic lives and they were the inspiration for the portraits of the ‘Monks’, as they were also the story tellers of the ancient history of their area.
En 1997, nous avons effectué une merveilleuse résidence artistique en Irlande, sur l’anneau du Kerry, à Cill Rialaig, Ballinskelligs. Nous avons vécu dans un minuscule cottage dans un village restauré datant de la pré-famine, sur les falaises surplombant la mer Atlantique. Nous avons tellement aimé la résidence que nous avons loué une maison pour 3 mois supplémentaires afin de mieux profiter de la région. L’histoire de la région est si riche, avec les vestiges d’anciennes pierres dressées, de maisons rondes et de lieux de sépulture visibles dans les champs et les collines autour de la résidence. C’est aussi une région qui regorge d’histoires sur les moines qui vivaient sur les Skelligs pendant les “âges sombres” et qui venaient sur le continent pour enterrer leurs morts, ainsi que sur les Vikings qui ont fait des raids et pillé la région. Pendant notre séjour, il y avait dans la région de nombreux hommes âgés et pas très âgés qui menaient une vie hermétique et solitaire. Ils ont été la source d’inspiration pour les portraits des “moines”, car ils étaient aussi les conteurs de l’histoire ancienne de leur région.
