Mother comes from my series on Woman. She is inspired by the ancient vessels of the mediterranean and the ancient clay mothers found in the earth in Europe. She is about the abundance of life, the cycles of the seasons and of birth. She is the life guardian.

In 2000, Cartwright spent some months in Bangkok while he was casting work at several of the foundries there. On days off he would visit the local markets where he would watch the fighting fish. They would be separated from each in glass jars, they were constantly engaged in attacking each other, mouth to mouth, on either side of the glass, looking like they were in the long kiss. This kiss of deception intrigued him, referencing other great stories of betrayal.
