J’aimerais partager avec vous un aperçu du travail de Michael et en particulier de sa série Bird. Je connais le travail de Michael depuis de nombreuses années et je suis toujours interpellé par le langage de son travail et toujours ravi, même si ma compréhension peut parfois prendre des années à se former. La créativité de Michael est spontanée et s’inspire de sa libre interprétation de la vie, il est libre sans compromis, et c’est cette liberté qui est finalement humaine bien que parfois oubliée dans les règles que nous plaçons autour de nous. De la liberté est née la série Bird, la référence la plus puissante au langage de Michael en tant qu’être libre. Michael aime l’histoire et son travail peut être “lu” et c’est peut-être l’oiseau dans son travail, (car il y en a beaucoup), qui reflectent l’état de son esprit. Certains oiseaux qu’il a créés sont couchés, “Reclining bird”, et semblent provenir d’une période où il devait se reposer et attendre avant de pouvoir “voler” à nouveau. Mais il y a aussi le “Nid”, un oiseau fier et droit qui surplombe son nid, défendant ou protégeant sa création dans la forme d’œuf qu’il a devant lui. Portrait d’un oiseau, abstrait et beau, est une œuvre qui reflète la noblesse du propos.

Michael aime le contraste dans son travail, ainsi vous finirez souvent par trouver le dur et le tendre dans la même œuvre. Parfois, il s’exprime à travers la texture, douce et lisse et rugueuse et bosselée. Parfois, c’est à travers des formes organisées, magnifiquement finis et leur agencement adhoc, irrévérencieux des proportions.

I would like to share with you some insight into Michael’s work and in particular his Bird series. I have known Michael’s work for many years and always I am challenged with the language of his work and always I am delighted, though my understanding can sometimes take years in formation.  Michael’s creativity is spontaneous and draws inspiration from his free interpretation of life, he is free without compromise, and it is this freedom that is ultimately human though sometimes forgotten in the rules we place around ourselves. From freedom comes the Bird series, the most powerful reference to Michael’s language as a free being.  Michael loves the story and his work can be ‘read’ and it is perhaps the bird in his work, (for there are many), that reflect the state his spirit is in.    Some birds he has created have lain down, ‘Reclining bird’, and seem to have come from a period when he had to rest and wait before he could ‘fly’ again. But he also has ‘Nest’, a proud upright Bird overlooking his nest, defending or protecting his creation in the egg like form before him. Portrait of a bird, abstracted and beautiful, is a work that reflects the nobility of purpose. 

Michael likes contrast with his work, so you will often find the tough and the tender within the same work.  Sometimes it is expressed through texture, soft and smooth and rough and lumpy.   Sometimes it is through organized, beautifully finished forms and their adhoc arrangement, irreverent of proportion.
