Cartwright’s ‘Mask Figure’ is greatly inspired from African art but made more so because of his own bird forms of owl heads and emus with long legs. There is something about the emphasis on the large heads and the emerging legs that brought him to read the mask forms in African art into this work. Generally the mask is a constant in Cartwright’s work over the four decades of his creating.
