Bibliography
1959 Shona Nunan born January, Daylesford, Australia. Her father, an artist and teacher. Her mother is working as a pay mistress, a daughter of a publican at Mitta Mitta Pub in the mountains of Victoria. Michael Cartwright born October, Wangaratta, Australia. His father an artist and oil representative and mother working at home. His mother, the great granddaughter of Ellis Casper, convict to Tasmania and leader of the great Gold Dust robbery of 1839 in London. 1974 Michael exhibits his first painting at the Blind dog association and sells his first work. 1976 Shona commences her Fine Art course at RMIT, Melbourne Australia Shona has her first solo exhibition of sculpture and sells all her work at Hans Knorr Galley, Emerald Australia. 1977 Michael commences his Fine Art course at Caulfield Tech, (now Monash University) 1978 Michael installs his environmental art work at a Portsea beach in Victoria, Australia. It is presented on the front page of `The Herald’, the Melbourne daily newspaper. 1980 Shona leaves college to travel through Australia and overseas. She travels through Asia and Europe studying philosophy and theology. Michael travels to Northern Australia. 1981 Michael and Shona return to college at RMIT where they meet and are married in October. 1982 Michael teaches art at Xavier college Jacob is born, their first son. 1983 Michael and Shona move to Myrtleford where Michael teachers Graphic design. 1984 Michael and Shona travel to Carrara with their son Jacob to commit their lives as artists. They rent a small home in Ortonovo and a studio in Carrara. They return to Australia and exhibit their work together at a gallery run by Shona’s father, Brian Nunan. Michael exhibits in Mildura Sculpture Triennial Shona, Michael and Jacob move to Bungendore, NSW where Michael’s old teacher, Stuart Ross is now living and building in the gothic style. They move into a tent looking over lake George where Michael works on the building. They join Canberra contemporary art space and Michael works in the exhibitions committee and board of management 1985 Michael and Shona move into an abandoned house on the farming estate of Gidleigh in Bungendore where they repair it and set up studios to work. 1986 Michael has his first solo exhibition at Bitumen River, artist run space in Canberra. Shona exhibits sculpture at Hamilton Regional Gallery Victoria. They return to Melbourne and live in Emerald and Preston for short periods. They buy a home and studios in a small community called Yandoit., 2 hours out of Melbourne. 1987 Shona and Michael exhibits at the Holdsworth Gallery, Sydney. 1988 Their second son, Sollai is born. Michael carves his first large marble sculpture at the Barossa sculpture symposium, Tanunda, South Australia. Michael exhibits in the Mildura Sculpture Triennial. Michael and Shona establish `Art Explorations’, art classes for children. 1989 They move to Castlemaine in Victoria where they buy a small home and build a studio there. Shona exhibits at the Wallace bros. Gallery Castlemaine. 1990 Shona exhibits at Holdsworth gallery. Michael goes to New York and sets up a studio on the roof of a building at 13th and 3rd. He meets and is inspired by, sculptor, Karl Mann. 1991 Shona and Michael exhibit at Holdsworth gallery. Shona, Michael, Jacob and Sollai move to Port Moresby. Shona teaches sculpture at the Fine Art dept. of the Port Moresby University and Michael teaches print making. Riots by the students force them back to Australia. Michael exhibits at Alchemy Gallery Melbourne where he sell his works at 10% of its value for the people who “complain about the price of art”. Michael becomes President of Castlemaine artist inc. a group of 100+ artists and art lovers. He arranges group thematic exhibitions every month. 1992 Shona exhibits at Holdsworth gallery. They meet Greg Smith, artist. Michael and Greg start sculpting from found bits n pieces and do a series of `play art’. Michael and Shona exhibit at the Australian Contemporary Art Fair. Michael and Shona exhibit at Qdos gallery, Lorne, Australia. Michael and Shona join Meridian Gallery, Melbourne. 1993 Shona exhibits at Meridian Gallery. Michael exhibits at Meridian Gallery. Michael does a business course for the Arts. Michael and Shona move to Richmond with their family and set up a studio there. Michael and Shona establish sculpture classes for the children at Gold St Primary school, Clifton Hill 1994 Michael and Shona’s first trip to Hong Kong. They establish links with architects and Interior designers. Shona is accepted into the Sandra Walters Gallery in Central HK. They return to Hong Kong every 3 – 4 months from then on. Shona is a guest lecturer at the Australian Contemporary Art Fair. Michael exhibits at Meridian Gallery with Tony Scott. Michael shows two works Journey, a 13 meter long water tank with two carved images in granite and steel. The work is now at Lindenderry Hotel, Redhill, Victoria. They are included in a travelling exhibition of China finishing at the Hong Kong Art Fair with Meridian Gallery. Their first studio opening in their Richmond studios is a far greater success than anyone had predicted. Shona sells `Manifestation’ at the opening. Jacob, their son is accepted into the Victorian secondary school of Arts for music. 1995 Michael goes to Singapore and secures a place in Art 2 Gallery at the substation. Shona’s final exhibition at Holdsworth Gallery, Sydney. Holdsworth Gallery closes. They exhibit at Solander gallery, FORUM exhibition. Michael and Shona go to Bali with their sons and stay with a contemporary artist in Ubud. They also research local art bronze foundries. 1996 Jan Oluf Willums sees the work of Shona and Michael in the Hong Kong gallery and invite them with the family to his Art Foundation in Provence at the foot of Mt Saint Victoire for 3 months. They complete a folio of work and the foundation purchases it. The works are cast in Toulouse, France Shona's `Farmer' in front of Mas des Graviers Shona exhibits at the Annex Gallery Hong Kong. 1997 Michael installs his commissioned sculpture in the Grand Plaza Hotel Singapore while taking part in a sculpture symposium at Fort Canning Park, Singapore with the Shona tribe sculptors of Africa. Exhibitions at Sandra Walters Gallery, Ian Rogers Gallery and Ivanyi Gallery. The final of 4 successful studio openings at their Richmond studios. 1998 Shona and Michael are asked to do a residency at Cill Rialig Art foundation in county Kerry Ireland. They pack up their studio in Richmond as their son Jacob has won a scholarship in composition to a music school in America. They decide to try and live in Ireland. They take a small house after the residency on the bay of ballinskelligs and their son, Jacob, leaves school to join them. 1999 After 6 months in Ireland they travel to Scotland for a brief visit to see the sculptures of Henry Moore in the Parklands. They travel to Southern France and take up residency in the home of the secretary of the Willums Art Foundation where they produce a body of work. Michael paints and Shona sculpts. They exhibit at the Willums Art Foundation. Shona recieves a commission in Hong Kong and Michael returns to Melbourne briefly to oversee the casting. While on route he visits the Singapore gallery and gets the commission to do a 5 meter tall sculpture for the Singapore Expo. installing the sculpture at the Expo building, Singapore The family returns to Australia and move back to Castlemaine. 2000 Shona and Michael are asked to mount an exhibition in the gardens of one of their collectors at the Lindenderry Hotel in Red Hill. Michael travels to Bangkok to complete a new studio near the airport only to find the builders have done nothing in his absense but have moved a family in instead. He rents a small space to complete some marble sculptures. His commission for Jan and Peter Clark,`Reclining figure’ is being carved in the mountains north of Bangkok. He is also overseeing the casting of his bronze section for the Expo building. They purchase land in Chewton, central Victoria and begin building their `Solar Glass house’ and studios 2001 The family are in a major car accident while building their home and studios. Michael is unable to attend a major exhibition of theirs in the Rotunda, Exchange Square, Hong Kong. It becomes increasingly difficult for Michael to stand while sculpting and working tools so he starts to concentrate on painting more and more. Michael and Shona have an exhibition at Mita Building in Singapore. 2002 Completion of the Solar Glass house in Chewton. Shona exhibits in the Toorak Village Sculpture show. They travel to Lucca in Italy to attend a 82nd birthday party of their friend and art collector, Neillma Gantner. While there, they decide to return to purchase a home. 2003 They return to Bagni di Lucca and to the small village of Pieve di Monti di Villa in the mountains with their family for six months and repair the home. 2004 They rent a shop in Ponte a Serraglio which they use for studios. Later that year they start an arts group called Artisti Uniti. 2005 They purchase three apartments in Ponte a Serraglio and turn one and a cantina into studios. They create the business Worldco Arts. 2006 They leave Australia permanently and live in Ponte a Serraglio. 2007 The sale of the Solar Glass house in Chewton, Australia and the purchase of two shops in Ponte a Serraglio. Their son Jacob joins Worldco Arts and establishes links to the UAE. 2008 Michael receives a commission to paint a mural 50 meters long by up to 5 meters tall for the Capital M Beijing restaurant in Beijing. Shona receives a commission to do `The Acrobats’ for a private client in Stanley Beach Hong Kong. Shona begins her new series of sculptures inspired by Cycladic art. 2009 They secure their first commission in Saudi Arabia and cast the work in Shanghai. Michael installs his painting in Capital M Beijing restaurant. Journey for CapitalM Beijing restaurant 2010 Their son, Jacob marries Jaqueline Varela in Italy. Shona continues working in her studio. Michael receives a commission, 3 paintings for Morgan Stanley head office in Hong Kong. Michael receives a commission for the Metropolis Hotel Tianjin, China. 2011 Artists in Residence at Yew Chung International School, Hong Kong and Beijing Shona creates Harvest, an edition of 8 the sales of which are to be donated for the construction of schools in underprivileged children in China through the charity, Seeds of Hope. Michael creates his first mosaic using Italian smalto (glass tiles), Lost in the Cosmos - 200 x 240 cm for the entrance of Yew Chung International School, Hong Kong. Shona's sculptures, Joy and Torso are purchased for the Hamilton Regional Gallery, Victoria, Australia. Michael is commissioned to create a 500 x 250 cm painting Setting free the Golden Carp for the new art gallery at Yew Ching Foundation, Hong Kong. 2012 Shona's sculpture Guardians (two works, 220cm high), are commissioned for the front entrance of the Warnambool Regional Gallery in Victoria, Australia. |
